Who makes Subtotal
I'm Robin Lange, a software engineer in Auckland. Subtotal is the grocery app I wanted and couldn't find: one that plans the week's meals to the money you have, writes the list, and adds up the shop as you go.
It started because I wanted a running total while I shopped, so I'd know at the shelf, not at the checkout, whether the trolley was still on budget. Subtotal reads the price off the shelf ticket, so there's nothing to type. The meal planner came next: a running total only tells you about the shop you're already in, and the cheaper week gets decided at home.
The planner is my own work, not a chatbot. Tell it who's eating, what to avoid and what you'd like to spend, and it searches for a week that fits in under a second, on your phone. When you scan prices in your store, it plans with those next time.
Your plans, lists and prices stay on your iPhone. There's no account, and nothing of yours sits on a server I run.
Before Subtotal, I worked on the editor at Atlassian, the part of Confluence and Jira you type into.
