Keeping to a grocery budget in the store
- Set the budget before you go. A number written down beats one you decide at the till. The grocery budget calculator gives you a starting point for your household.
- Add as you go, not at the end. When the total is in front of you, you can put something back while you're still in the aisle.
- Check the unit price. The bigger pack isn't always cheaper per kilo; the small print on the shelf ticket tells you.
- Count multi-buys properly. "2 for 5" only helps if you'd have bought two anyway.
Questions
Is this shopping calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. Close the page and the list is gone.
Can I type prices with a comma, like 2,99?
Yes. It reads 2.99, 2,99, 1,234.50 and 1.234,50 as you'd expect, so it works with euro and dollar prices alike.
How do I compare two pack sizes?
Divide each price by its weight or volume and compare the price per kilo or litre. Most shelf tickets print this as the unit price, often in small type under the main price. The unit prices guide has a two-pack comparer that does the sums for you.
What does the Subtotal app add?
In the app you point your camera at a shelf ticket instead of typing, your shopping trips are kept on your iPhone, and it can plan a week of meals to your budget and write the list for you.
Skip the typing
Subtotal does this on your iPhone: point the camera at a shelf ticket and the price goes in. It keeps every shop, and can plan the week's meals to your budget too.
